A crown aims to save and protect an existing tooth has been damaged by trauma or decay. In cases where the tooth has undergone root canal treatment, a crown may also be needed to strengthen the tooth once the pulp has been removed.

A bridge is similar to a crown but differ in that it replaces one or more missing teeth. The prepared bridge is anchored to natural teeth on either side of the gap.

Crowns and bridges are made from porcelain and gold alloy. The porcelain can be made to match natural teeth colour and is resistant to staining. Gold provides the crown with strength, hardness and durability, which is most useful for molars because they are used for crushing and grinding.

On your first visit, our dentist at Sydney Dental Health will first take an impression of your teeth for record keeping. Then your teeth will be reshaped by one to two millimetres to make room for either the crown or bridge, and a second impression is taken.  This impression is then sent to a dental technician who will make the crown or bridge.

On your second visit, the piece is then cemented into place. The dentist will make minor adjustments to make the crown or bridge more comfortable once it has been fitted.
